Peak experience
In North America at least, 2008-09 is going to be the “winter of the very big lift,” with Jackson Hole’s new tram and Whistler’s Peak to Peak Gondola.
The Jackson tram has a vertical rise of 1262metres and replaces one that ran from 1966 to 2006 and had a 50-passenger capacity. The new tram can take 100 and cuts the ride time from 10.5 minutes down to nine. Its scheduled opening is December 2008.
If you’re a lift-opening groupie, then you can also get along to Whistler’s Peak to Peak Gondola opening in December.
This lift covers a distance of 4.4 kilometres and has just four towers. The biggest gap between towers is just over 3 kilometres and the greatest height above the ground is 436 metres. They even have a cabin with a clear bottom so you can get the most out of that height.
